Before You Retire, Try Rehearsing

Want to know if you can retire  or whether you’ve accumulated enough money to retire?  Try it at home before you make a decision.  Let’s say you know that your social security and pension benefits at retirement will be $50,000 per year, but you’re earning $100,000 per year.  Try living on $50,000 for six months, pretending that that’s the amount you have to live on.  You may find that $50,000 is enough for the essentials and most of the “like to haves.”  Or you may find that it’s not enough.  In any case, you will be in a much better position to make the plunge, decide to delay, or even find a post-retirement job that will keep you busy and provide a little extra income.
